Rod Smith wins Sports Broadcasting award |
This past summer Smith called some of the biggest events from London 2012, including the showdowns between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin’s gold medal performances, and Canada’s first medal of the Games as Jennifer Abel and Émilie Heymans won bronze in women’s synchronized diving.
Overall, Smith delivered play-by-play for three of the Top 10 most-watched events from the Games including swimming: women’s 50m freestyle final (#4); swimming: men’s 4x100m medley relay final (#6); and swimming: men’s 1500m freestyle final (#7).
“Rod’s best in class play-by-play and trademark powerful voice have made him one of the most recognizable broadcasters in Canadian sports,” said Stewart Johnston, President, TSN. “He did an outstanding job calling marquee events from the Summer Games and couldn’t be more deserving of this award. On behalf of everyone at TSN we congratulate Rod on this great honour.”
Sports Media Canada also recognized National Post sports columnist Bruce Arthur, a regular TSN Radio and TSN The Reporters contributor, for his work covering the Games. In addition, longtime Edmonton Sun sports columnist Terry Jones was honoured with a career achievement award while the Edmonton Journal’s Ed Kaiser was recognized for his photography from London 2012. Sports Media Canada also named True North Sports & Entertainment’s Mark Chipman as its Executive of the Year.
